Why black don’t crack
--
Have you heard it said 'Black don’t crack?’ Do you know what that means?
It means we age well and don’t look all dried up when we reach our 60s.
I found that to be the case when my age group got called in for the first vaccine.
The 65-and-older folks in this white rural town look 15 years older than me.
I don’t believe I’m being vain. I have my theories on the matter and I would be remiss if I didn’t share the secrets of our shared aging success.
I believe our diet has a major effect on aging. I’m suggesting that the secrets to black not cracking lie inherently in our cuisine.
Black folks don’t eat what is commonly known as Soul food every day. Such a caloric intake would kill us off and negate the benefits.
The food class primarily responsible for our dermal health is:
Greens.
Black folks love their greens; i.e. mustard, collards, turnip, and kale. To black folks, steaming is demeaning. Only spinach should be cooked that way.
My Greens Recipe.
- Greens of choice
- Chicken broth
- Smoked ham hocks
- Yellow onion
- Dash crushed red pepper (optional)
(Measure nothing. Eyeball everything.)
Boil ham hocks in chicken broth for an hour. Add greens. Let them cook down.
Add onion. Simmer for
1.5 hours.
Enjoy your greens. Eat regularly, Drain and store the leftover juices.
Black folks call it pot liquor.
Drink pot liquor in between cooking a pot of greens.
That’s my theory on why Black don’t crack. I can vouch that it works for me.
